Our June event commemorating the D Day Landings was a big success with a steady stream of visitors throughout the day. A big thankyou goes to the Lutterworth branch of the Royal British Legion who were in attendance the whole day complete with Standard Bearer. Amusingly, the flagpole was too tall to be erected in the village hall and had to stand outside. We were honoured for them to take the lead on our planned minutes silence.
A vote of thanks to Pat and Barbara for their invaluable help in the kitchen and also to Frank Cooper and Alex Bouchard for stepping in at the last minute.
Monday 10th June saw our Quiz hosted by the Crown and it went very well and everyone enjoyed the event. A big thankyou to Ben and Julie at the Crown for hosting and organising the quiz on our behalf and another big thank you to our own Jen for her part in organising it. We must also thank an anonymous donor who gave £100 towards prize money plus prize donations from Flackies, Max Electrical, Whites the Florist, Payne and Bond and Fortnams the Chemist. Thank you also to everyone who took part in the quiz and it gave a huge boost to the history groups funds.
There is a bit of a breather now before our next event in September. Tuesday 10th and Wednesday 11th September is all about the school and to coincide with the school’s 250th Anniversary. Displays will show from the schools logbooks how easy it was to be absent from school and from the school menu book what was presented to children for meals. You may be surprised.
Once again, if you have any information, stories or photographs of any family or friends or even yourself at the school PLEASE let us know as we would love to include them in our displays.
The 5/6th November sees our event all about the church and its vicars. Quite a controversial subject and includes old newspaper articles about some good vicars and some who may have chosen the wrong path!
Although there is a bit of a gap before our next event, we are not idle in the background. We are working hard on the next two events and we have even identified four topics for next year, 2025. We do like to plan ahead although, things out of our control, do often scupper our plans. There will be more on 2025 events over the coming months.
Running the history group takes a tremendous amount of hard work which is not always obvious. Currently there are only four active committee members plus our angels in the kitchen at events. We would love to increase both committee members and non-committee volunteers to ease the workload.
So, if you feel you could be part of the team and get involved in Gilmorton’s fascinating history, we would love to hear from you.
