July 2026 Newsletter
In last month's update we flagged the financial situation facing the history group. As part of this we took the decision to cancel the June event and again our apologies here to all and anyone affected, but it was a necessary step to help us through to the end of our calendar year. We have also renegotiated some of our website fees to help us through. So, this is a timely reminder to anyone who has still to renew their membership subscription (Just £10!) for 2026 to do so. Payment can be made by cash or cheque at 4 Lutterworth Road, Gilmorton, or if you prefer a bank transfer e- mail
We are working on a display to be shown at the Beer Festival in August recounting its origins and how it has evolved since its start in 2002. Many of you may have attended or been involved in some way with this event which has grown remarkably since its inception. If you have any stories, memories or even photographs of this you’re willing to share we’d love to hear from you. Do get in touch via our e-mail address or contact John Buckle (07942 234366) directly who is co-ordinating this.
Our Future 2026 events calendar now looks like this:
AUGUST - History of the Beer Festival display (at the Beer Festival hopefully!)
SEPTEMBER - National Heritage week with Gilmorton church.
Held in the church itself, there will be a display drawn from our archives on church history etc. Phil Frost will talk about some of the interesting aspects and features of the church.
The main event on Tuesday 15th with the display and videos and Bellringers will be there for a regular practice and to demonstrate the art (science?) of bellringing. Possibly other events ongoing in the week. Free entry although contributions gratefully accepted.
NOVEMBER - Wednesday 11th only - “Polish Settlement Camps” Bozena Kunzewicz will be a guest speaker on the Wednesday morning ONLY and will give a talk on the Polish settlement in the UK and especially the displaced Poles after the war in camps such as the one at Husbands Bosworth.
Also in NOVEMBER will be our AGM on Tuesday 10th November at the Village Hall. We encourage all to attend as we aim to have a wide discussion about the future of the History Group, its nature, direction and where it goes in future. If you have ideas or thoughts on this, please do let us know and feed them in beforehand. We welcome your contributions.
And just to reiterate our previous messages we really do need your support. The history group committee currently consists of just four hard working people.
However, as from the AGM, Pete will be stepping down, not just as secretary and treasurer, but from the committee completely. That will leave just three committee members and without your support we cannot continue. If you feel you could help or get involved in any way do let us know.
Our Village Information Board monthly quiz continues to run. (open to all not just members) The answers to which can be found on one or both of the two Gilmorton display boards (one on the Village Hall wall and one by the Recreation Ground towards the tennis courts).
The quiz question for June was: What links a wood to a porch?
The correct answer was the two Queens' (Victoria and Elizabeth) Jubilees. First name out of the draw was Gill Mynot. Congratulations to Gill who wins a £20 M & S gift card.
